Shumenov vs Flores - Beibut Shumenov outpoints BJ FloresJoin us for a quick weekend roundup of boxing action featuring Shumenov vs Flores and Viloria vs Soto.

Shumenov vs Flores

At the Palms Casino Resort, Las Vegas, Beibut Shumenov won a Unanimous Decision over BJ Flores to capture the Interim WBA Cruiserweight title. You know, the belt that’s sort of like the regular variety, but not the Super variety, that’s…oh, whatever.

Shumenov (16-2, 10 KO) won via scores of 116-112 thrice, but the victory won’t have pumped much life into his rep as a 200 pound world beater. The bout was uneventful, with both men perhaps a little too respectful of each other’s firepower. Caginess, indeed.

That said, Shumenov looked like the superior ‘boxer’, using his footwork and combinations to stifle Flores (31-2-1, 20 KO) who just couldn’t cut off the ring well enough. All in all, this just wasn’t the heavy-handed affair many fight fans had hoped for.

The PBC card also saw Featherweights Claudio Marrero (19-1, 14 KO) and Rico Ramos (24-5, 12 KO) squaring off. Marrero wasted little time, getting the job done in the 3rd round after delivering a fight-ending left-hook. Also, Isiah Thomas worked to a Unanimous Decision against Jordan Shimmell, earning scores of 98-92, 97-93, 99-91.

Viloria vs Soto

At the Florentines Gardens, California, former two-division champ Brian Viloria couldn’t care less for overtime, ending his Junior Bantamweight affair with Omar Soto in the 1st round. After decking Soto (23-12-2, 15 KO) three times – courtesy of two right-hooks – the bout finally came to an end with just under a minute remaining.

It was quite the statement from Viloria (36-4, 22 KO) who would relish a rematch with Juan Fransisco Estrada, or even undefeated pound for pounder Roman Gonzalez. At 34-years-old, a fight with either couldn’t come sooner for Hawaii’s Viloria.

In the co-feature, Featherweights Guy Robb (16-1, 7 KO) and Edwin Solis (6-4-3, 4 KO) locked horns in an 8-rounder. Robb had little problems figuring out his opposition, and worked to a Unanimous Decision after scores of 79-73 (thrice) were turned in. Also, William Silva scored a 5th round knockout of Adam Mate, and Abner Lopez won a Unanimous Decision over Daniel Calzada in their 6-rounder.
