Golovkin vs Wade will be unfolding later in April 2016Gennady Golovkin Will Take on Dominic Wade in April

If you thought Canelo vs Khan sounded like an intriguing mismatch, then be prepared to be totally bummed out about Gennady Golovkin’s next opponent, Dominic Wade. The fight will be televised on HBO on April 23rd at a yet to be named venue. So who is this Wade exactly? And is his 18-0, 12 KO record anything to get excited about?

Personally, I’m not too excited about this one. Though Wade fills out nicely as a Middleweight, he looks to be totally overmatched on paper against the ‘GGG’ wrecking machine. Upsets do happen in this sport, and so, if anything, the best we can realistically expect is a Golovkin vs Monroe Jr-type affair. (You know, a more competitive than expected scrap, but ultimately ending with the other guy mangled on the canvas.)

The underdog will no doubt be hyped up at the Golovkin vs Wade kickoff press conference, with his unbeaten record and ‘IBF Mandatory Challenger’ status being waved about plenty. Hey, promoters promote fights. No hate.

Andre Dirrell Raising Funds for Flint Crisis

The Super Middleweight champ, also a native of Flint, Michigan, is desperate to raise awareness about the ongoing lead poisoning water crisis in his hometown. Dirrell himself has many family members living in the affected area.

“As an athlete, I have a great appreciation for the importance of water in someone’s life … the people of Flint need it for much more than drinking,” Dirrell said. “They need to bathe, cook, and stay alive … I have over 30 family members living in Flint who can possibly be poisoned, including six or seven of my nieces and nephews who range from the ages of 2-13 … Let’s help save my city.”

Dirrell has created a ‘Go Fund Me’ page which he hopes will generate generous donations from the public.

Juan Diaz & Mike Alvarado to Return on March 19th

Remember Juan Diaz, the Lightweight star who produced the ‘2009 Fight of the Year’ against Juan Manuel Marquez? Well, Diaz (40-4, 19 KO) is still around – just about – and will be returning back to your TV set on Solo Boxeo Tecate on UniMas on March 19th.

The former WBA champ will fight on the same card as Welterweight contender Mike Alvarado (34-4, 23 KO), another fading-into-obscurity-type, who was last seen being brutalized by Brandon Rios in their January 2015 trilogy-maker. The card will be hosted in Houston, Texas, with all the A-sides currently matched against TBA.

What’s your thoughts on today’s headlines? Is there more to Golovkin vs Wade than meets the eye? Or is it just a gap-filler until the long-awaited Canelo Alvarez vs GGG hopefully comes together for later this year?
