Matthysse-Postol - Lucas Matthysse and Victor Postol partake in WBC Clean Boxing ProgramMatthysse-Postol will be the first bout to partake in the WBC Clean Boxing Program. With the support of the VADA (Voluntary Anti-Doping Association), the sanctioning body hopes to encourage fighters to enroll in the program to help eliminate performance enhancing drugs from the sport.

Prohibited drug taking is a problem in all sports, and it certainly rears its ugly head from time to time in boxing. And for that reason, the WBC’s new program will be embraced by most who hear of their new venture.

Lucas Matthyse and Viktor Postol will not only undergo random drug testing during training – and out of competition – but will also be educated on the dangers of illegal drug use through webinars and reading materials as part of an awareness program. It’s probably not as patronizing as it sounds.

The WBC Clean Boxing Program is no doubt a step in the right direction, but how big a step is a matter of opinion. Since enrollment is voluntary, no fighter is obliged to join. There is hope, however; if the program manages to enroll a significant number of athletes, it could encourage a lot of the remaining fighters to sign up. To do this, the WBC-VADA would have to shine a light on those not enrolled, which would of course not be a ‘good light’ exactly.

It’s a theory, anyway.

Matthysse-Postol is scheduled to erupt at the StubHub Center, California on October 3rd. Matthysse (37-3, 34 KO) is our #1 Junior Welterweight, and Postol (27-0, 11 KO) our #7. The vacant WBC 140 pound crown will be up for grabs.

What’s your take on the WBC’s new anti-doping venture? And while you’re here, who wins on October 3rd?
