The upcoming weekend of boxing will see plenty of action, with marquee names such as Danny Garcia and Olympian Luke Campbell hitting TV screens. Join us as we take a quick look at what’s on the horizon over the first weekend of August.

August 1st TV Boxing Schedule

Garcia vs Malignaggi

ESPN2, BT Sport 1

Garcia vs Malignaggi banner - Danny Garcia, Paulie MalignaggiIn the PBC on ESPN main event in Brooklyn, New York, Danny Garcia (30-0, 17 KO) and veteran Paulie Malignaggi (33-6, 7 KO) will be trading leather in a non-title Welterweight bout. This is one of the biggest fights of the weekend, but is splitting opinion as to just how competitive it will be. If Garcia is looking to rejuvenate himself with a big performance, then on paper it shouldn’t be too difficult. Malignaggi’s danger lies in his unrelenting self-belief and boxing smarts – not his power.

We’ve seen boxer-puncher Garcia fail to lift crowds in recent outings against fighters like Mauricio Herrera and Lamont Peterson – if that guy shows up, Malignaggi has a fairly good chance of bringing home the W. Undercard action will see Middleweight Daniel Jacobs (29-1, 26 KO) take on Sergio Mora (28-3-2, 9 KO), plus Heather Hardy (13-0, 2 KO) vs Renata Domsodi (12-6, 5 KO) in a Featherweight contest.

Campbell vs Coyle

Sky Sports 1

Campbell vs Coyle banner - Luke Campbell, Tommy CoyleIn Hull, England, two of Matchroom Boxing’s finest Lightweights will be colliding. And it has to be said that this is a very good match-up. Olympian and pro prospect Luke Campbell (11-0, 9 KO) will be in a gut-check encounter with fellow Hull-born boxer Tommy Coyle (21-2, 10 KO). Coyle represents the first true test of Campbell’s career, and what he lacks in amateur excellence, he makes up for with steely determination. Popular opinion is that Campbell should come out on top here, but it’s difficult to get carried away with that notion.

The 27-year-old looks the biz given his background, but is yet to come up against a live opponent. How Campbell deals with Coyle – assuming he does – will reveal a lot about his game and future in the sport. This could be a good one, folks, with the winner about to steer closer to a Lightweight world ranking.

Brian Rose (26-3-1, 8 KO) will be hoping to avenge a 1st round knockout defeat against seasoned Carson Jones (37-10-3, 27 KO) in the night’s Junior Middleweight co-feature. British fans should be more than familiar with Jones, a granite-chinned brawler, who came close to upsetting Kell Brook back in 2012. Ricky Burns (37-5-1, 11 KO) will be taking on Prince Ofotsu (15-4, 11 KO) in a Junior Lightweight contest. Burns, a former Lightweight titlist, will be looking to return to winning ways following a string of recent defeats, which includes Omar Figueroa.

Also, Dillian Whyte (14-0, 11 KO) – who is on a future collision course with Anthony Joshua – will be looking to blow out the beatable yet dangerous Irineu Costa (17-4, 15 KO) in a Heavyweight 8-rounder.

August 2nd TV Boxing Schedule

Payano vs Warren

BounceTV, Boxnation

Payano vs Warren banner - Juan Carlos Payano, Rau'shee WarrenAt the Full Sail University, Florida, Juan Carlos Payano and Rau’shee Warren will be battling in what looks to be a competitive PBC on Bounce headliner. Both men are amateur standouts with five Olympic tours between them. Payano (16-0, 8 KO), who will be defending his WBA (Super) Bantamweight title, is the stronger, more experienced fighter tipped by most to take away a decision. But it wouldn’t be a considered a major upset if Warren (13-0, 4 KO) were to leave with the victory.

Support will come from two 154 pound 10-rounders, comprising Yudel Johnson (17-1, 9 KO) and Jorge Cota (24-1, 22 KO), plus John Jackson (19-2, 15 KO) and Dennis Laurente (49-5-5, 30 KO).
