Floyd Mayweather decided to rise about the 'hate' and defend recently defeated Ronda RouseyThe internet can be a hotbed of ridicule and ugliness at the very best of times, as Ronda Rousey knows far too well after being crushed by Holly Holm at the weekend. But Floyd Mayweather has decided to rise above all the ‘hate’ by rushing to Rousey’s defense instead, while, you know, getting in a bit of ‘promotional spiel’ at the same time.

“I don’t think it’s cool how everyone is trolling her on social media,” Mayweather told FightHype. “Certain things you have to learn. People will love you on Friday and then Sunday morning, it’s nothing but negative comments and people making jokes and people making fun about you, which I don’t think is cool.

“I’ve never been on the other side, so I don’t know how it feels. I’m pretty sure she’s a very, very strong person, but we still have to take into consideration that she has feelings. Me as a former fighter, I think that she needs some time off to regroup and refocus.”

It’s surprising to hear these words coming from Mayweather, the now retired future Hall of Fame Welterweight star. Most of all because it wasn’t so long ago that Rousey was calling him out for a fight. Yes, that actually happened.

Mayweather went on to offer some constructive criticism, stating that while Rousey’s ground work is exceptional, the MMA star has some holes in her boxing/stand-up game. And that Mayweather, one of boxing’s greatest cerebral minds and technicians, wouldn’t mind giving her some pointers.

“I want Ronda Rousey to hold her head up high and don’t let this discourage you. If you need help as far as with boxing, I’m here to help you. It’s all about timing and inches. Her ground game is unbelievable. She’ll be okay. You know, but I’m waiting for the comeback of Jon Jones and the other guy that Jon Jones faced before [Daniel Cormier].

“I would love to sponsor those guys. I look forward to working with a lot of MMA fighters as far as teaching them boxing techniques. It’s the little small things in contact sports that can take you to that next level.”

What are your thoughts on Floyd Mayweather’s support for Ronda Rousey? Would Rousey ever take Mayweather up on the boxing lesson offer? Or would personal pride get in the way? Could Boxing Base’s next headline be: Floyd Mayweather Becomes Ronda Rousey’s New Trainer?

Er, no. I think my imagination was running a bit wild there.
