Result: Marcos Maidana wins via Unanimous Decision
BoxingBase.com is excited to cover December 14th, 2013’s tantalizing main event matchup between Argentine banger Marcos Maidana and up-and-coming self-proclaimed ‘second-coming of Mayweather’, Adrien Broner. Maidana (34-3, 31 KO) put in a dominating performance, dropping Broner (27-1, 22 KO) in the second and eighth rounds en route to a unanimous decision in the Alamodome, San Antonio, Texas. He now holds the WBA Welterweight title.
Broner has captured three world title belts, his first back in November 2011, when he knocked out then WBO Junior Lightweight holder Vincente Martin Rodriguez in the third round. Next came the WBC Lightweight title in November 2012 after stopping Antonio DeMarco. On his welterweight debut, Broner earned a split-decision over veteran Paulie Malignaggi, which added the WBA title to his growing collection.
Maidana was looking to continue his recent three consecutive win streak, which included victories over Jesus Soto Karass and Joseito Lopez, all under trainer Robert Garcia. His victory over Broner will no doubt be considered an all-time career high and possibly lead to headline fights with the likes of Floyd Mayweather.
That night’s referee was Laurence Cole joined by judges Levi Martinez (117-109), Nelson Vazquez (116-109) and Stanley Christodoulou (115-110).

Round 1
Maidana throws jabs to body. Big left hook lands from Maidana; he swarms Broner on ropes and continues his attack, not landing but roughing up Broner. Broner holds on but can’t mute Maidana’s attack. A grazing hook lands from Maidana and he chases his man down. One way traffic from Maidana. Broner can only hold on. Maidana throws a grazing right. Broner on ropes again. Maidana loads up with every shot, eyeing a knockout. Broner’s defense saves him from punishment; he walks away showboating. Maidana works the body, swarming, lands big right hand to Broner’s jaw. Broner shrugs it off and finds his jab. Likely from frustration, Broner simulates sodomizing Maidana in corner. Huge Maidana round. 10-9, Maidana.
Round 2
Hard jab from Maidana, then rushes in with big left hook. Broner down! Broner returns to his feet with shaky legs. Maidana immediately swarms a hurt, holding Broner. Crowd goes wild. Maidana throws hook, loading up with such ferocity that he falls down after missing. Maidana quickly goes to work on Broner’s head and body, landing big upstairs. Broner in deep water, receiving significant punishment for first time in his career. Maidana throws uppercuts, hooks on a cornered Broner. All power shots. Broner finds composure and lands with a clean left hook as his head clears. Maidana comes forward, more uppercuts, hooks. Good defensive work from Broner. Another onslaught from Maidana, lands a big right before the bell. 10-9, Maidana (20-18, Maidana)
Round 3
Broner’s defense working better. Maidana leaps in with heavy shots, right hand lands to the body. Broner on the defensive, tries to work the jab. Maidana charges in with combinations; hooks, right hands land. Jab from Maidana. Broner starting to get straight shots off. Body attack from Maidana, met by nice right counter from Broner. Broner trying to come forward now. Maidana right hand to forehead of Broner, followed by right to the body. Maidana elbow to the face of Broner; Broner retaliates, referee only warns Maidana. Left hook from Broner to end round. Maidana, 10-9 (30-27, Maidana)
Round 4
Broner jabs to head and body, rolls off partially landing hooks from Maidana. Maidana continues to assert himself, misses with left hook. Both fighters jabbing. Maidana lands big left hook on Broner. Maidana returns to jabbing, as does Broner. Maidana works body and upstairs; jabs to body. Broner’s shoulder roll proving ineffective as now Maidana lands up and downstairs combos. Another big left hook from Maidana. Nothing but bad intentions from both fighters as their shoulders clash after bell. Maidana, 10-9 (40-36, Maidana)
Round 5
Maidana immediately leads with a big left hook but misses. Right-hand, sharp counter from Broner. Maidana aggressively comes forward, but receives left hook counter. Broner begins to plant feet and trade, trying to counter and meet fire with fire. Maidana tries to rough him up, asserting himself physically. Broner gets off nice three-punch combination. Maidana jab lands. Broner seems too economical with punches due to work rate and power of Maidana. Maidana lands flurry of hooks. Broner comes forward, trades, but receives hook in return. Broner rubs elbow in Maidana’s face. Both fighters getting physical; referee warns Broner for pushing. Broner lands left hook to end round. Broner’s best round. Broner, 10-9 (49-46, Maidana)
Round 6
Broner ups work rate. Maidana dirty on inside, lands uppercut and hook. Maidana works body with nice shots. Maidana works back to body. Broner is matching Maidana’s punch output, having a good round, landing nice flashy combinations. Maidana fights back with more body work, but Broner is becoming more comfortable. Maidana continues to be effective with overhand rights and left hooks; Maidana lands two hooks to Broner’s body and a cracker to Broner’s temple. Tough round to score, but Maidana edges it. Maidana, 10-9 (59-55, Maidana)
Round 7
Maidana surprises Broner with a five-punch combination of hooks and straights, the last right hand landing clean and heavy. Maidana throws hooks in close range, trying to break through Broner’s defense. Hard shots from Maidana. Broner is finding his feet, showing heart, trying to return fire – preferably on the outside which Maidana won’t allow. Broner pushes off Maidana a few times. Broner getting busier. Maidana unloading heavy shots consistently. Both fighters trade, land. Broner making fight competitive now, not the stronger but clearly superior boxer. Broner lands counters but his defense exposes his chin for a Maidana attack. Maidana, 10-9 (69-64, Maidana)
Round 8
Broner throwing more, lands nice left counter hook. Broner lands right hand. Maidana pushed onto back foot for first time. Good defense from Broner. Maidana lands right to body, comes upstairs with a huge right hook that drops Broner. Broner gets up and holds; Maidana caught in clinch and head butts Broner’s jaw. Maidana responds by staggering across ring and falling to canvas, protesting infraction. Maidana has one point deducted. Big boos from crowd who suspect Broner was time wasting! Fight resumes and Maidana immediately unloads hard shots on Broner, swarming. Broner comes forward, answering with flashy combinations. Maidana right hand. Broner gets Maidana on ropes, lands nice shots. Maidana, 9-8 (78-72, Maidana)
Round 9
Maidana lands with a jab followed by a big right hand. Broner on ropes, ducks and rolls out. Maidana all over Broner; uppercuts hooks, up and downstairs, Broner tries to hold and spoil, pushing down Maidana. Broner is staggered by left hook and tries to hold once more. Broner in trouble on ropes. Broner hurt, starts back peddling out of danger, all defense now. Broner forced into corner, Maidana a bull coming forward, firing big shots to the pit of Broner’s stomach. Maidana a true powerhouse trying to take his man apart. Broner tries to get counters off, Broner gets off nice hook, but doesn’t faze Maidana. Broner tries to come forward but always open to big shots. Can Broner hurt Maidana? Maidana works Broner’s head and body. Broner demonstrates a great chin and elite physical conditioning. Huge round for Maidana. Maidana, 10-9 (88-81, Maidana)
Round 10
Maidana outlands Broner in a jabbing exchange. Maidana lands with long overhand right. Broner stands ground, no longer on back foot. Nice one-two combination from Broner, looking for counters. Broner still susceptible to overhand right. Broner outworked, his patience unrewarded; can’t seem to time shots as Maidana is so busy. Maidana lands big hooks. Maidana, 10-9 (98-90, Maidana)
Round 11
Broner stands ground still, gets off flashy three-punch combination. Broner’s counter-punching is getting off; straight right hand, nice uppercut, asserting himself. Broner takes right hand then delivers a right in return. Maidana responds to Broner’s early clowning by simulating a ‘hump’ when Broner’s back is turned. Maidana lands big right straight, left hook, then left-right combination. Broner responds with flashy one-two combo. Maidana leaps in with left hook, comes forward and pins Broner on ropes. Uppercut from Maidana. Flashy combo from Broner to end round. Maidana, 10-9 (108-99, Maidana)
Round 12
Referee stops fight to cut tape from Broner’s glove. Broner lands nice one-two counter on Maidana, and pursues Maidana with vicious urgency. Maidana fires back. Broner takes left hook, but stays on Maidana. Straight right from Broner. Broner warned for using elbow in clinch. Maidana on back foot, respectful of Broner’s skill. Maidana kept on ropes and takes straight right-hand. Maidana returns fire upstairs with left hook and body shot. Straight right from Broner. Both trade centre ring. Maidana lands short left hook upstairs. Maidana on ropes, left-right hook combo stuns Broner. Maidana throws up and downstairs with hooks. Both fighters trade in closing ten seconds.
