Wladimir Klitschko extends TV network deal ahead of Klitschko vs FuryWladimir Klitschko Extends TV Fight Deal

Wladimir Klitschko recently revealed he has signed a five fight deal with German network RTL. It’s certainly a bold move from the undisputed Heavyweight champ, especially at 39-years-old. It could also say a thing or two about he views the challenge of Tyson Fury.

The Kazakhstan-born fighter’s contract with RTL ended after his last fight with American Bryant Jennings, and it seems Klitschko still feels he has plenty more to offer in the sport by renewing the contract.

With a stunning record of 64 wins, 3 defeats, and 54 knockouts – and a seat in politics next to big bro Vitali likely waiting – it’s admirable the guy still has the hunger to fight. It’s also a little confusing. Highly successful, financially set up for life, well respected…so, Wlad, what’s left to prove?

There are a couple of things the Heavyweight king might be looking to still achieve. Hall of Famer Joe Louis made 25 successful title defenses, reigning for 11 years. Klitschko isn’t too far behind equaling or breaking that record – but at 39-years-old, it could become difficult.

Klitschko will be making his 19th title defense against Fury on October 24th, and has reigned for over 9 years. Pretty impressive stuff – but is Klitschko chasing old Louis’ record? If he is, another 5 fights would likely take him into 2017 which would see him equal – if not slightly overtake – Louis’ reign length.

It wouldn’t match Louis’ title defense record, however. At that point, Klitschko would have amassed 23 defenses, falling just 2 short. Chasing Louis or not, it’s an interesting theory.

Groves vs Jack Postponed

George Groves’ clash with WBC Super Middleweight champ Badou Jack is reportedly off, according to ESPN. The pair were scheduled to collide on August 22nd, but according to a Showtime spokesman, the fight date is currently unconfirmed.

“Showtime doesn’t have a live boxing event on August 22,” said Chris DeBlastio, Showtime’s vice president of sports communications. “We had contemplated doing it [that date], but it didn’t materialize.”

There is a rumor currently circulating that the bout will be featuring on Floyd Mayweather’s farewell fight on September 12th. This seems like it could bare some truth given Jack fights under the wing of Mayweather Promotions.

But…to add confusion, Groves tweeted a couple of days ago that he had just attended the WBC’s 30-day check weigh-in (for the August date). Mmm…

We’ve a feeling this will all get cleared up nicely when Groves’ promoter Team Sauerland makes an official announcement within the next week. Join us for updates.

What are your thoughts on Wladimir Klitschko’s deal with RTL for a further five fights? Is he overlooking Fury? Does it even matter if Klitschko loses in October? Most importantly, does Klitschko have another five fights in him? Spill your thoughts on Groves vs Jack, too, fight fans.
